The Night We Camped in Our Driveway

For the fun of it. On the coldest night in December. With two little girls. And two dogs. Why not, right?

It was actually pretty fun. And we had the convenience of our own bathrooms! We carried laundry baskets full of the blankets off of our beds, containers of Christmas cookies and our everyday salt and pepper shakers out to camper. Even a candle for ambiance. We reheated leftover ham and beans and ate off of Sam's new set of "Shackleton" dishes that H got him. (They're the blue and white flecked metal dishes.) We played games. H said it was the best night ever. I'd have to agree. It was nice to be away from all of the other distractions, though it wasn't very far, it was far enough.

And it was really cold that night. We would pick the coldest night in December to camp in our driveway, we're just like that. We bundled up. Sam..er um...Santa got me a very nice long fluffy pink robe with a hood and isotoner slippers for Christmas. If you ever go driveway camping in the cold you should ask Santa for them too because they will really keep you warm. The heater in the pop up works really well, until you get up in the bunks. Well, that's not entirely true. While the really, really, really loud heater is on its ok, you can feel the heat some but then it goes off and your cold. So, it would kick on be warm and loud and then turn off, then turn on again right away because its 19 degrees outside. We couldn't take the noise anymore, I couldn't take the noise anymore! I stay in hotels a lot when I travel for work and the heating/cooling units drive me bonkers. They wake me up all through the night and I never get a good nights sleep. This was 1 million times worse! Really! After it was turned off the real camping feeling set in. We had sheets and a comforter under us and a blanket, sleeping bag and comforter on top of us so we stayed warm under the covers but were breathing cold air. That made it rough, we had to pull the blankets over our heads to get the air warm. It was kinda rough. The worst part for me was when H had to got to the bathroom at 2 am. I took her so we walked out in the cold and I had a hard time warming up from that. She was fine. That girl, cold does not bother her. I am always telling her to put socks on. She'll walk barefoot in the snow if I'd let her. Don't get it. When we woke up in the morning the glass of water I had was icy. It was cold.

So, the driveway camping wasn't entirely for fun. We are planning a trip to Zion National Park sometime in the next few cold months so we needed to test out the camper and see if and how everything works. We just got it a few months ago and haven't taken it out yet. So, since then we have purchased quiet electric heaters so we will have warm air to breathe! Other than that the pop up is fine.

The dogs had fun too. They told me.
